Vocational College
Selfoss, Iceland
The town of Selfoss is graced by a lively glacial river, majestic landscapes and human ambition. As part of its evolving role the South Iceland College (FSU) launched an open design competition to expand its existing facilities. The proposal is for the reconfiguration of one existing building linked to a new structure housing carpentry and metalworking workshops together with teaching facilities. The new building takes on an industrial form, providing a series of workshop spaces linked with a glazed corridor with an open courtyard in the centre. Taking cues from Icelandic vernacular, the new building is externally clad in corrugated sheets with the interior lined with timber panelling; the articulated roof houses wide lanterns providing ample daylight to the spaces below. A simple solution providing a practical and inspiring environment for new generations of skilled folk.
